Tailgate Hinges

My 66 bed doesn't have any. On one side it looks like there is a backer plate that has pre-threaded holes for the hinges to bolt into, but this is missing on the other side. Bad thing is, on the side that has it, one of the old bolts is still there but broken off. I don't see these backer plates listed in any of the catalogues. I don't see why I couldn't just use a nut and washer to hold the thing on but I'm not sure can reach up in there to get the nut on. Any thoughts?

By the way I'm looking for a set of hinges. I emailed a few users that I thought might have them.

Crawl under the bed an look for the access areas coming in from the sides of the bed. You might have to drop the bumper mounting brackets to see what I am talking about. You can make a nut plate that will allow for you to thread bolts into. Take a piece of 3/16" plate steel that is long enough to fit both bolts and tap it for the right size threads or pick up a set of nut retainers to do the same thing.

I believe you can use any truck F100 -350 series up to 11978 for all internal tailgate parts; like hinges; latch etc. The only difference I see between my 65, 68, & 78 is the bumper pads, & outside handles. I recomend checking your local salavage yard & retreive the parts you need from them. also acouple part carriers sell them as well.

Styleside F100/250 2WD 1964/66 / Styleside F100/350 1967/72

The following parts do not fit the older 1957/63 Styleside beds that were also used on 1964/66 F350's and 4WD 1965 F100/250's, 1966 F250's.

Two different hinges. One type fits 1964/72, t'other 1973/79.

1964/72: 2-C4TZ-9943018-A .. Tailgate Hinge

1973/79: >> 2-D3TZ-9943018-A .. Tailgate Hinge <<
-------------------------------------------------------------------
The support arms are the same, 1964/79.

2-C4TZ-9944400-A .. Tailgate Support Arm ~ Fits: 1964/79
--------------------------------------------------------------------
The latches are different between 1964/72, 1973/79.

1964/72: C4TZ-99431D76-A .. Right Latch / C4TZ-99431D77-A .. Left Latch

1973/79: >> D3TZ-99431D76-A .. Right Latch / D3TZ-99431D77-A .. Left Latch <<

Thanks Bill; I knew your the man to break down those numbers; so 64-72 hinges & latch plates are interchangeable; and the support arms thru 72 interchangeable.
I also want to clarifty the difference between hinge & support arms..
The hinge is a circular bracket mounted at the l/r lower portion of the bed holding the bottom protion of the tailgate onto the bed.
The support arms are a scissor type arm that attach to the upper protions of the bed side & tailgate middle.
I personal don't see the difference in my 78 support & hinges than my 65, 66, & 68 trucks. I will view them more closely to determine the difference.
Thanks Bill.

Tailgate: C4TZ-9940700-A 1964/66 was replaced by: C7TZ-9940700-A (1967/72 style). The entire body design changed in 1973 (1973/79 tailgate: D3TZ-9940700-A), so the 73/79 tailgate won't fit the earlier models.

Support arms (scissors) are the same: 1964/79

Hinges & latches: The 1964/72 & 1973/79 Ford truck parts catalogs show different part numbers between 1964/72 and 1973/79.

The 1975 Ford O.S.I. Catalog doesn't show the earlier hinges and latches being replaced by the later 1973 type.

O.S.I. = Obsolete, Supercede, Interchange.

Thanks for that information. It is definitely the hinge I need. I have the scissor supports. Knowing that up to 72 will fit should make it no problem to get a set. I'm 99% sure I have a 66 bed on my 63 truck.... if anyone wants to look at my gallery to confirm I'd appreciate it.

I'm 100% sure you have a 1964/66 bed. I have the same bed on my truck..it's been there since I bought it new. I'm 200% sure the grille is from 1966.

From what I see in the picture, the bed you have is tweaked on the right side, so body work may be required before the tailgate is installed.
