Rough Idle, many problems

Hey, I have a 95 Bronk with the 351. It has some pretty good problems. First of all, If you guys put your windows all the way up and hold the button for a couple seconds, can you watch your volt guage drop alot? And you lights dim? I dont think thats normal lol. I figured maby an alt. I got the battery checked and its ok. Ok heres my major annoying problem. I have a very irratic idle. When in park and at an idle it cycles between around 900 Rpm down to 600 and then back up to 900. Its imbarrasing especially sitting in the parking lot at work with the truck running and the air on and having it do that. I can also change my idle drastically with the turn of my air conditioning switch. I found a crack on the PCV hose towards the intake so im going to take care of that. What else guys? We are moving from michigan to Tennessee soon and i have alot of stuff that i have to haul down there and i want to make sure the truck is in A1 Condition. Im also getting 12.2 mpg which i think is terrible. But after having a 460 im not going to complain to much. I need some help!

ok one thing at a time. sounds like either your tps or iac is causing the erratic idle. i have to ask if you pulled codes yet? also when was it tuned up last? check your timing set it to 12*btdc with spout connector removed. then reconnect, start truck and then shut down and unhook battery. change out the tps and remove/clean the iac valve. reconnect battery and drive for 30-45mins in various driving conditions like stop/go traffic and some wot sessions. this will help the compter relearn.

have you changed anything on the motor recently as well? I would also look into upgrading your alt to a 130amp or 160amp. they will be plug/play on that year except for the mega fuse that would need installed to protect everything. the 130amp you can locate at wrecking yards, the 160 and fuse block wiring i would get here
http://rjminjectiontech.com/?p=6 go to the altenator accessory page for the fuse block wiring.

The Check Engine is not on. I just put new plugs and wires in it. My air filter is dirty so im going to change the oil and put a new filter in it. What is the spout connector? I know what the TPS is and where it is located but i dont know what the IAC <- Intake air control rite? (I could look it up in my book lol). Sounds like some of my problems. My dad told me that the timing could be off. But with all the sensors i think its a sensor. I guess we are both kinda right. With that kit. What one do i buy?

are you running copper plugs? spout connector is on driver side fender back by the hood hinge. its a grey plastic connector that is just dangling there. you must pull that before you set timing. the iac is the silver canister sensor on the side of throttle body.

www.fordfuelinjection.com has instructions for pulling codes.

Clean the Idle air controller if you look at the throttle body there is a round canister with wires coming out the end then where it bolts up with two bolts you should be able to tell where it lets air go by the butterfly in the tb. Basically it is a servo motor that moves a valve to let air bypass the tb. Take it off the tb spray out the openings while holding the servo motor up don't let the crud run back into it!! Or you can take that off and just soak the valve and valve body in carb cleaner. Use a light oil on the valve shaft and silicone it back on should cure it up! Don't forget to disconnect the battery. Make sure you keep your air filter clean and make sure the tubing going to the tb has no cracks or tears! Any dirt or carboniferous sludge can through it off!

pull all the cruise gear out never worry again!! Bypass the ABS servo disconnect the light and modulate the brake pedal like a real driver!!! But I didn't tell you to do that!!
What size tires are you running? It could throw off the abs sensors!

The ABS light was on way before i bought it. I really want my ABS and cruise to work so taking it out is not an option. I had a 86 POS 150 that the cruise worked, so i know this one can get to working. I just gotta find out wut the problem is. I think my recall is already done on it, How could i check to see if it was done? Also im running stock size tires.

Thumbs up abs switch update

The switch is on the end of your master cylinder single plug two blades if the recall has been done you will have a little pigtail in line there it is a fusible link.

Pull the VSS out of your rear end and clean it with a rag. Also, when was the last time you drained the fluid out of 8.8"?? Replace that fluid as well.

Pull up to the Ford dealership. Have them run your VIN number. They are required by law to follow up on your truck and VIN number as per the recall regulations. This will be free of charge.

You have a 95 amp alternator, that is pegged sitting at idle, and your extra electrical input doesn't help it's struggle. If the battery charges back up once you pull your fingers off the switches, it works fine. If your truck dies when you do this, then the alternator needs attention.

Deal with it ASAP! It's downright impossible to diagnose idle issues when you have known vacuum leaks.

This is because the white vacuum line (this colored line is few and far between!!!) on the passenger side of the fender wall has fallen out of it's canister or is cracked. It should be towards your firewall with a return line that heads in the direction towards your glovebox. Plug it back in or check it for leaks/cracks.

Like kemicalburns said... test your TPS and IAC. If you pull the plug on the IAC while your truck is idling in park and it doesn't die. There is a potential problem. Do a thorough test on your TPS. Not just closed throttle test. I've seen these pass the closed throttle test and go wacko through the throttle positions. It should jump smootly from 0.85v up to 4.5-5.0vdc through the positions.

This could be a number of neglected issues on the vehicle. You have a known vacuum leak, and an ABS or PSOM issue. This could cause your injectors to spit out more fuel than necessary, and your transmission could be running in limp mode with the ABS light on.

Tackle these issues one at a time. Your truck will run much better once they are taken care of. I bet your mileage jumps an mpg or two as well.

Hope this helps!

Mike
