Question a/c on or off??

Howdy, all! Have a 2000 F-150, 4x4, 5.4 Lariat. I bought it second hand with no owners manual. Question I have is: does the A/C run all the time? I am getting what feels like conditioned air even when I have the dial in anything but A/C mode. Is this normal? If not, is there a simple way to check it out? Many thanks for any input. Jim

I also have an '00. I read my owners manual when I got the truck but don't remember anything about always-on A/C. Simple and quick way to check is watch the compressor and belt clutch while a helper runs the switch through all the settings. If you see the compressor clutch engaged in any position other than the actual A/C or Max position then yes you will get conditioned air through the vents. This still doesn't answer the question if this is correct always on or if you have a defective switch or sensor somewhere in the system that is allowing the compressor to run all the time. Might be quicker to call your local A/C specialty shop or Ford dealer and just ask if this is correct. Good Luck.

The AC compressor will run in the A/C or Max A/C position, but it will also run in the Defrost position even when the temp control is set to hot. Newer vehicles use the AC evaporator as a dehumidifier for the defroster.

Download a new owner's manual from www.fleet.ford.com under MAINTENANCE.

It's all explained in the book... so no one has to guess.

Basically, the compressor is enabled in ALL modes EXCEPT OFF, FLOOR, and VENT.

Thanks, guys! That answers all my questions and more. Gonna give that download a try. A Haynes manual is just about worthless!! Thank you, again. And my wife says I spend too much time on the internet!! What does she know. Jim
