I have a question about synthetic motor oil and gear oil I am hoping someone may be able to help me with. I have never heard anything bad about synthetic oils until I went into a local truck parts store and asked about running synthetic gear lube with my Detriot locker. He told me not to use it because synthetic oils foam and do not lubricate when this happens. I asked someone else and he said it does not happen. I know some engines and differentials require synthetic oil I want to besure I have not been given any misleading information and would appreciate any opinions or facts about this subjects. Thanks ahead of time.
It seems to me that limited slips need a special gear lube and that if you use regular 90wt in them they won't function properly, I don't know if the same holds true for a locker or not.
From what I have seen and heard about synthetic is that in all cases you want to be sure your engine is well broken in before you use them or otherwise they may not break in properly due to the added lubricity of synthetics. In a rear end or manual trans I don't see where there should be a problem. The ONLY engine I know of that you don't want to run syn oil in is a Harley.
Just to add a little to Trail_Rider's response-in limited slip diffs with clutch packs you DO NOT want to run man-made lube, it's to slippery! and the diff won't work correctly, however, I have tru-tracs(gear driven limited slips)and have only run the synth in 'em, 60K and no problems with very smooth operation, as far as foaming, make sure your breathers are clear, I run little K&N's on mine to keep out dust/dirt ect., and realize that if anything is not sealed correctly it will let you know in a big hurry due to the smaller molecular structure of the synth fluids. Your detroit locker is all gear driven also. Chuck P.
Thanks for the info. I wanted to run synthetic lube with the locker but after that guy who probably should be fliippin burgers told me that it foamed it made me think twice.
