I have a 81 long bed 4x4 with a 302 and auto overdrive. I have 3.08 gears and really dont want to change them. I am going to get a edelbrock intake this next week for it, along with and edelbrock 600 cfm carb. I am trying to find the correct combination of parts to give the engine as much low to midrange torque as I can. I am thinking that the carb would be a little to big for this. Can you guys recommend a good combination of parts to increase the horsepower and tourque, and still be very drivable. Thanks.
Why would he be beating a dead horse with that combo? I think it is a great start. I've been advised that with that combo, you need to look at one of Edelbrock's cam setups. Give Edelbrock a call and they will suggest the proper cam for additional HP and torque. You need to remember to open up the exhaust side also which could include headers, true duals, hi-flow cats, hi-flow muffler, 2 1/4" to 2 1/2" exhaust pipes, and heads with larger valves. Also, before you install your new manifold, you could do some port matching and polishing of the heads on the intake side. It's amazing what a little Dremel tool grinding and polishing will do for a few extra HP.
Thanks, I appreciate positive feedback. The truck moves out pretty good now with the aod's low first gear. It just seems too run out of power too soon. I think I can get good power, and have a fun truck to drive, while still getting good gas milage. I check with some of the cam companies in the next couple days. What do you think of the windsor jr. heads from world products? Thanks again. Mark.
You didn't specify the budget or other mods, but it has been my experience (I've built engines for 2 79 351M 4x4 pullers and a 350 Chevy in a S-10 Blazer) that gears help small blocks best for the bucks, but since you like the gears, then you need a rebuild with some hi-po headwork, exhaust, and install a Comp Cams 268 or 272 grind with Crane Hi-bleed lifters, and a 2000 stall torque converter. This combo will get off the line using the intake and carb you mentioned, and have a great hi end. You may suffer poor gas mileage cause you can't keep you foot out of it. People will think you've swapped in a 351. The weak spot will be the rest of the driveline. Good luck.
