I have a 99 explorer with 113K and would like to do what ever maintenance it needs to make it run smoother and get better gas mileage. The truck has not had anything done to it since about 35K besides the every 3 month changes. I would really like to see if I can get better gas mileage and have it run a little smoother.
which engine? but, any car will get the best mileage it can with a new set of plugs/wires, air filter, gas filter, clean the injectors... also inspect the brakes and wheel bearings to ensure the wheels have no resistance - and be sure your tires are inflated correctly for their rated spec - I bet most people overlook tires as they can cause a 10% drop in fuel economy - Forget those stupid things like "the tornado" funnel thing - they are a gimmic - but, if you do all those things, and don't drive with the windows open over 35mph, you are doing all you can, provided the engine is in perfect mechnical shape...
when in doubt - stick with MC double plats which is what was in there when new... I only use MC plugs and wires in any ford, as merlynr mentioned, the correct plugs AND wires too will make a big difference... the only thing about the tranny would be the shift points, but it is still good to keep on top of the maintance - if the tranny is shifting normally, I'd look at everything else first... not to say that is a bad thing to have done, but normally for the tranny to cause any fuel economy issues, you'd notice a problem with it first...
Do you have a photo of your 71 dump, merlynr? - SWEET!
