Hi I have a 7.3 Ford Excursion 2 wheel drive with limited differential. It started having a whinny noise from the differential. Ford dealer told me it’s going to cost $1600 to replace worn ring and pinion gears/ bearing/ axle seals. I’m pretty sure I can do it myself. Where can I find cheap parts? HELP!
Randy's Ring and Pinion is a good place to start. Google him up and go from there. May just be the carrier bearings or even the clutch packs on the LS unit. How's the fluid?
well all that is fine but the thing is that $800 for parts alone is b.s. ring gear pinyion , and "rebuild kit" wich i thik is way to much ." i knoe because i was a ford parts guy along time ago and was a mechanic for 1 year before i joined the millatary but now i dont have that much time to do things like this so i took it to a ford dealer and told them to findout whats going on LOOKS LIKE I WILL HAVE TO MAKE TIME
also maby now is the time to change the gearing perhaps a little taller for lower rpms on hwy any who i will have to do it myself next weekend if i can get parts soon enough and cheep enough
damn I just had the same thing done a few weeks back Tim. Total with Labor was 860. Do it yourself. I cannot imagine it being to hard to get parts unless your in the middle of no where.
well rudys is just down the road(150 miles) in portland but there parts came somewhere around the same # and i just had another bump in the road of life so i am going to have the stealer do it and use emergency funds (creditcard) to payfor it on the plus size i am changing the gearing from 3.75 to around 3,50 better hwy crusing rpm next planed mod more power then the tranny and converter but hey by then maby ill beable to put the alisson 1000 behind the 7.3any way thanks for all the suport and ideas but WHEN IT RAINS IT POURS thank god i am a plumber making some good $$$ or the truck would end up on blocks with a car payment still due
I just had a gear swap done (3.73 to 4.56 Yukon's) on my 4x4 Excursion for less than that -- parts for both axles and labor. I'd do some checking around.
Dropping those gears to 350 is going to drive you crazy. As it is the truck lags with out modifications and now lowering gear ratio it will be slower then a yugo. Keep your 373. The truck is to big to go any smaller. Those are actually a little to small for this truck. Nebmike that is a great price you got for Yukon 4.56's.
My total bill came in right about $1550 to swap from 3.73's to 4.56's. Thats two gear sets and the associated materials/labor. $1600 for one axle (and the rear is easier than the front) seems really expensive! Several people in here have commented on getting BOTH axles done in the $1600-1800 range.
I couldnt be happier with the set-up now! I wish I'd done the swap a year sooner!
nebmike, I assume your change to 4.56's was due to you putting on larger tires? What size?
Well, I'm running 285/75-16's... so not a huge difference from stock (I couldnt tell any difference in performance after I put 'em on). But I tow a 30' camper pretty regularly up in the mountains and I just really wanted better towing performance (which I didnt get with the Banks Powerpack).
I really wish I'd done the gear swap before the Banks system... I'd have about $4k more in the bank right now. The gear swap gave me exactly what I was looking for in terms of performance.
yeah about the lag well i am over goigng fast of the line now but i think that it will be good for now . when i start doing modifacations like some of yall have done i think that it will all pay out who knows maby bye then ill beable toi put an alison 1000 behind the 73
