I have a 94 Ford f-150 with a 4.9L Straight 6 and it was a wussy engie i haul snowmobiles and stuff and i just would like more power.. I was thinking about putting in a 351 but then came the choice of witch engie the 351W windster or the 351 Cleavland i heard there is a difference but im not sure what that is could someone give me some advice on what to put in? oh yeah almost forgott also i heard about a 351/400 modified? what do you think would be the best result? thanks much
The 351 windsor is your best bet because it will mate with your transmission. I think you'll have to get new engine mount dedestals, and some new brackets for your front end accesories. Bigger radiator too. I'm building a 351W now to go in place of the 5.0 in my 1990 F-150, and I'm hoping the swap is as easy as it looks. Somebody else can probably give you more spefics on going from the 300. Also, have you thought of building up another 300? They are great little motors, and you can get some serious low end power out of them.
The 300 is no wussy, it's designed as a heavy duty truck engine and will tow damn near anything if it's in the right chassis. The 351W will be a faster street truck/toy, but it's not going to give you appreciably more towing capability. If you just want to go quicker and not lose your ability to tow, you're probably time and money ahead building up the 300. Clifford makes a whole lot of quality speed parts for it as do a lot of other manufacturers.
Not badmouthing the 351W, it's a great engine, but there's a whole lot of people who think the 300 was the best pure truck engine ever built. (A friend of mine who's a diehard Chevy fan, says it's the second best behind their 292 I6, so I guess even the infidels apperciate it.) Before you write it off, check out your options.
