I have a 97 ranger with 158K on her. Recently shes been running higher rpms than normal and shifting kinda rough. When it first started happening it would lurch a bit while driving, but thats stopped. Today I was coming off an on-ramp (had to go uphill, then down) when I noticed my overdive off light was blinking. It did this for a while then stopped, and the truck ran like it has been. I hit the OD switch on the stalk and the dang thing dropped RPM's and started running like she did before all this happened, and ran like a charm the rest of the day. My buddy has an 01 explorer that had a similar thing happen to it, light blinking followed by normal running before his puked on him. Im wondering if anyones had this happen, and what the result was. Im dead broke and my tranny dying will be huge. Any ideas or suggestions would be great.
EDIT- Its the 5 speed auto with overdrive, 4WD, 4.0V6
Also, hi everyone, Im jason, this is my first post on the forum.

Reason: new info
You need to get the code(s) pulled to see what the ocmputer has self-diagnosed.
The El Cheapo scanners used by most of the auto parts stores probably won't pull the manufacturer-specific codes needed, but for the price of FREE, it's at least worth a trip by one.
Without the codes, no way to know more about what's wrong, although, I'd suspect expensive tranny repairs are on your immediate horizon.
