I like to keep updated on the big three motors. I have been reading on other sites that the 6.7L Cummins are having a little trouble out of the gate. Not bashing, just like to stay informed. The problem i see the most is engine rap. Can anyone go into detail as to exactly what this is?
I have know idea what "engine rap" is either. I have pulled with a 6.7, 6 speed manual though (3500 Mega cab). The engine seemed to be a little slow in building RPM, but after it starts to get a few miles on, it starts to loosen up a bit, and there's no problem getting it to spool up, and get into the turbo, as it breaks-in. Perhaps this what is meant by "engine rap"?
The big difference I find with the 6.7 compared to the 5.9, or especially the V8 diesels, is that it has a ton of grunt way down low. It's more low end grunt than the 5.9, and considering the 5.9 probably already had the most, that is saying something.
This 6.7 is getting 18mpg empty, and that is what many others have been reporting too. However, on one long distance trip pulling a 24' flat bed through mountains, it only got 11mpg. It's expected to improve a bit once it gets totally broke in.
