I know how that goes. My wife also rides dressage and man let me tell you I look at this big animal and wonder why am I paying $800 dollars a month for her to go run around in circles? That is a lot of money that could be put into my PSD.
I know what you mean Aaron...and we both know the 800 bucks your footing is about 1/2 of the monthly cost before the shows, right?
When my kid got into English riding, everyone said "Great for the kid, but very expensive", We were just covering the 140 a month for lessons and I wondered "what the heck are these guys talking about?".
Then came the horse shows, the leasing of the horse in order to ride it in a show, and the cost not only for the show for the day, but for the local place to haul the horse up, give the "training", grooming, etc.
Next thing we knew we were spending about 2G's a month, just for a 12YO's hobby....but we cut WAY back on that these days..hence the reason she hasn't been in a show for 4/5 months...
But, like I mentioned before, she needed to get into the finals in October, so we sprung for it as a "last hurrah", to see how she'll do.
Good thing the wife has a part time job now, or I'd have to actually work to buy my beer....
2 grand a month? that would buy a lot of car/truck parts. I hope your 12 year old has a paper route, or a babysitting gig or something to help dear old dad buy his beer.

Reason: typo
Yeah all the extra "FEES" suck. Thats why I have my truck and we have our trailer so we can make some extra money hauling someone else's horse to the shows..... Some people charge $1-2.50 a mile.....ridiculous if you ask me.

Honestly, it sorta "snuckup" on us, I was writing check for one thing, the wife was writing them for another...after a few months I started totalling things up, that's why we cut it way back to just once a week lessons and no more shows...till now that is...and one more show in October.
Hey, she loads and unloads the dishwasher...that's worth something, right?
I don't think you can put a price on something like this. It's quite an experience to share with someone. When I was in college, I had a girl friend for a couple of years that rode everyday. It's like fluid in motion watching a horse and rider when they connect.
Congrats Dad - Good show and good luck in future shows for your daughter!
