That's the next step that I would try.

I know this will sound odd but check you fuses and if the one for the overdrive is popped take the stearing coulum cover off and check the wires from the overdrive
switch rubbing around the key tumbler.Ive seem this before. This fuse controles the
charging system and power to the gages. The truck not running is probbly due to running out of battery power.

I think the voltage regulator harness is bad. When I unplug it and insert a tester into it I can not get a reading form any of the three ports. Also at start up the battery light does not come on. Will Find a harness and swap it out.

Any comment on the battery light not coming on?

I would check on what puddle jumper said in the previous post to this one first.
I didn't know that the fuse for the OD also powers the charge circuit.

I can not find the fuse / circuit for the Overdrive in my owner manual. So I checked every single fuse in the panel under the steering column. Non were blown or looked suspicious.

So I started to look through the engine compartment for any signs of bad wires and found a spot.

Some squarrel had start to build a nest and chewed one wire.

Here is location I found it and maybe someone can tell me what it does?

If you are stand next to the truck and looking into the engine compartment next to the front passenger tire you will see the battery, right on top of the wheel well (for the passenger tire) and hugging the front quarter panel, there is a wiring harness that has a plug on it with two green wires with a red stripe coming out of it.
The squarrel chewed the two green wires leaving little stubs of wire on the plug but I can not find were they went to, if anywhere? Did it go somewhere or just loop out and back? And what does it do?

I don't know the exact wires you are referring to, but it almost sounds like they go to one of the solenoids around the vacuum canister. Are you able to follow them out to see where they go?

I checked all around the vacuum canister and I can not find the other end of it. Does go into the vacuum canister or somewhere else? If it goes into the vacuum canister underneith I will have to remove the canister to find it.

I checked my freinds truck and the wire goes out and loops back into the plug. Solves that mystery. Still curious what the plug might be for and why it loops out and back in? Will get a new plug or fix the one i have and see if the low voltage issue is solved.

Well i did not fix the plug because I took it to ford parts counter and they had no idea what it was so i left it off. Big mistake!! The truck died again!! I took the truck to an independant deisel shop and they determined what the problem was!! Appearantly it's a wire for the charging system and without it the baterries are not charging from the alternator. They repaired the plug because ford had no record of the part and everything is charging again. I ran red top Optima's for 6 weeks with out being recharged, what a statement for optima's!!

What are your voltages now that it is fixed? I would like to compare your numbers with what my truck is doing.
I was going to do some research on the voltage issue today as I noticed last evening my voltage seems to be droping more at idle than it used to. The voltage is just over 12v on start-up then climbs over a couple minutes as the batteries come back up, but it has started to drop at idle at stops, causing the dash lights to dim, rev the engine and it climbs back to just shy of 14v. Batteries were new last Oct when I bought the truck and the aternator had been replaced with a Napa unit sometime prior to my purchasing the truck. My guess is a something within the alt. But one way to diagnose the problem is with all the experience on this web site.

Thanks for the help.
Dave
