'87 F350 4X4 460 5 speed. I just recently began getting vibration while in a nuetral power. What I mean is if I let off the gas, I get vibration between the time I let off and the time the engine begins to hold back the truck. The same with coasting. It seems that if no power is applied, it vibrates like I'm going over some catepillar tracks in the road. It also happens when I push in the clutch and coast. Not getting any better either. Anyone experienced this identical problem. I'm concerned that it might be front end bearing on the tranny, but I dont' feel vibration through the stickshift. I've heard about checking weights on the drivelines and checking universals..which I've checked out a little. It isn't in 4 wheel drive, but could this be front axle universals anyhow? Thanks in advance.

Tony, I had a 69 F250 once that I almost had out of the truck till I went to pull the radiator and found it was missing a fan blade...new fan...no vibration. Does the truck vibrate when its running but not moving? If so, try removing your accesory belts, might be a failing waterpump, alternator, etc. Keep us informed. Deen

Deen, Thanks for the input. No it doesn't vibrate when idling, at least not noticably. But I will check that out. Supposedly the fan clutch was replaced once before because of vibration, but it was so bad it wouldn't let the truck run smoothly. The engine seems fine, but it "feel's" like its somewhere in the driveline. Thanks again for the input. I see I posted in the less than appropriate section as this does'nt really relate to performance issues. I'll repost in the '80-'96 section but keep checking here. Thanks again.

I recently lifted a 1989 F150 4X4 about 5" and it required new custom driveshafts. The rear was causing the exact vibration you explained, like running over a washboard when the shaft is unloaded. The shaft manufacturer tried twice to balance it but it still vibrated. I used the "hose clamp method" of balancing a driveshaft as outlined in most service manuals and the vibration is almost unnoticeable. With a little more effort it will diminish altogether.
Try hose clamps at each end of the shaft one end at a time starting with one clamp. Rotate it 90 degrees at a time until you get vibration free. Add clamps if neccesary, this is trial and error, but will work if you are patient.

I'm new here and know I'm late but here it goes anyway. My '89 did something similar and it ended up being my rear drums were out of round. Even when I wasn't even using the brakes it would vibrate terribly on coastdown. Funny thing was the dealer for the longest time said it was normal for the ZF 5 speed to act like that!
It sounds like either drive shaft universals or the slip joint. Block the tires and put the tranny in neutral to relieve any tension on the driveshaft. Then crawl under the truck and try to move the driveshaft up and down at the joints. If any are loose, you have found the problem. Remember, you wont have any luck if the shaft has tension between the trans and rear axle. Good luck!
