Performance 400 Q's

This winter im looking to build a high rpm 408 and would like to build it to be quite a little screamer (weekend warrior).

http://www.chiheads.com/3v_manifolds.php
2nd to last on the page

I just saw this intake and see that it says "eliminated the need for spacers with our new 400M Cleveland manifold to suit our 3V 218, 225 and 185cc heads." Now does this mean it will only bolt up to these heads or will this intake work on a 400 with 4bbl 351c heads??

Also, has anyone else used a 4" steel 351w stroker crank in replacement for a iron 400 crank? What is involved with this, because the windsor crank has a different snout correct?

Now from my understanding that should bolt up to the factory iron heads, but there will be a port mismatch, similar to this: http://www.supermotors.net/vehicles/...y/media/504233

Thats not quite but pretty close, as thats the price motorsport spacers and a rousch/ford racing b351 (i think thats right) intake ported to fit a cleveland as close as can be.

Seems to me tmi uses some form of a windsor crank for their stroker kits, and you can get everything you there, but i think that the stock crank should be able to stand up to what you need it to (as there as lots of windsor and 351c guys using 400 cranks in their stroker kits, at least a few years back anyway), that said i'd do something along the lines of fully balancing the bottem end, arp stud, tmi's 4 bolt mains and the things like the exernal oil line or the cam bearing restrictors (i think thats right).

How much power are you looking to build, and how high do you want it to rev? As mine will be in the 450hp ish range (not entirely sure but a ball park), and it should rev to 7k, but 'm going to limit it to 62~6500rpm, as that should be peak power and i want it to last.

id like to be able to safely rev 6500 and make 450-hp and 400- ft lbs.

i have a pretty much stock 400 (4bbl with hei ignition and headers)

id like to have-hyd. roller cam, forged .030 pistons 9.5-10.25:1 CR, steel 4" crank, single plane intake and the most difficult part would be headers.
what i have at my disposal-4bbl C heads, flowed 750 holley, 1.73:1 roller rockers, a running 400.

The Windsor steel stroker cranks are internally zero balanced. That requires rebalancing your flexplate. Also a Rollmaster timing set is required.

Tim Meyer has all the details.

BTW, why not a 434? You will need new rods and pistons anyway if you use a stroker crank. They are not compatible with stock rods.

You could do an EFI 408 with stock internals and zero deck pistons and 4V heads. Tim has adapter plates that allow the insertion of Injectors when used with a 351C Intake. Use a Torker Intake and a Mass-Flo setup or a Throttle Body and manifold adapter with an EEC-IV computer and wiring.

The EFI is great for rock climbing and high angle operation.

You can see my EFI setup at Carlisle this weekend, August 3rd and 4th.

This will see SOME road time but nothing huge...maybe 2000 a year at max id say.

I cant afford the EFI. I have carbs and they are bolt on so it seems to be the only way for me to go. As for the stroker kit... If you order the kit im guessing you also need to order the rebuild kit? Id really like to keep this build under $2500-3000 and ill still need to buy another intake and the spacers and machining work/assembly.

Check with Tim Meyer, but I believe that the stroker kit will replace the rebuild kit.

You should be able to pick up a 4V Cleveland Intake on Ebay. Tim can also supply the spacers.

Depending on the amount of head/block machining, you could be under $3000.00.

that boss 302 set up looks enticing...after you worked your magic on the 185's how would the compare to other Cleveland heads - iron or otherwise?
