I originally thought there may be water in the gas - but both tanks act up the same way - I used some of the water dry stuff in each tank - drained the tanks - changed the fuel filter and it still has the same problem - acts just like water in the gas - when I drive it down the road it bucks and chokes and cuts out - I can switch to the other tank before it cuts out and it picks right back up - but then I switch immediatly back to the other tank and its fine for a few more miles
dosnt matter which tank I start out with they both do the same thing - -
anyone got any ideas as to what the prob could be?
read my post...I'm going through the same problem with my 86 5.0 EFI. I found that most of my problem was a plugged up catalytic converter which was giving me most of the grief. I changed out the exhaust to a 3" exhaust and it runs alot better. I , still have alittle bit of that problem left and I leterally changed every part of the fuel system with new pumps and senders in both tanks, a new High pressure pump, new hoses, new filters, and a new tank selectro electrical switch in the dash. The only other thing I can think of would possibly be a problem with my new resoprvoir and valve assy (the device that switches fuel between the two tanks located on the driver's side frame). I'll stay in touch with you if I finally figure out the whole problem and please do the same to me if you do.
well I hit the nail right on the head. It was the valve and resorvoir assy. Now, if you are lucky, it could just be your fuel filter which is in the botton part of that unit. Carefully unscred the 2 mounting bolts so you can unscrew the resorvoir portion of the assy. In that assy, you will find a fuel filter. I almost guarantee yours is plugged solid just like mine was. I had further problems with mine resulting in me chanigng out the whole unit (dealer only my price 125.00). Works great now...watch the thin o-ring that comes with your fuel filter because it's very easy to break it when screeing the bottonm cover back one.
