i have a 97 f-150 std cab 6ft bed i bought a 7.5 polly snow plow for this winter . when i called for a mount the guy busted my ***** about the plow being to heavy for my truck . i told him i would just find it else where . i know that i can adjust my torsion bars for the extra weight and i have seen alot of 1/2 ton trucks with plows on them . so how many of you have used plows and how did they work for you?
Those half tons either have significant added suspension or really light plows; they are pretty heavy and do a number on the front end. The front of these trucks isn't designed for load bearing capacity like a heavy duty truck. You can do it, yes, especially if you had a F250LD or F150 7700. But a standard half ton, no. Is it possible? Yes. Is it advisable? No. Not unless you don't intend to use your truck for much else.
thanks for your help grafekie but the wife says we can't afford a f-250 so it has to go on the 150 . good news is i only plan on plowing my own driveway .
That plow won't be bad on your truck. My Dad has a 7.5 foot snoway plow on the front of his 99 F-150 (not 7700 series). He also has a tailgate spreader on the back (with about 400 pounds in it) and 1200 pounds of bagged salt in the box.
Is he overloaded? Yes. Does the truck do it? Yes. It has for 2 winters.
I just got a 2001 F-150 (not 7700 Series) and am going to do the same thing to it. Except it will have an 8 foot plow on it.
We plow commercially but we respect the trucks. I KNOW it is not an F-350 or skid steer so I don't treat it like one.
With all this said your plow will be MORE than fine on that truck...especially since you are only doing your driveway (and you will probably do your neighbour's once in a while...trust me).
