Any opinions/experience on aftermarket heads? I've been looking at the Victor heads (Edelbrock), Ford Motorsport GT40, and World's Windsor series. One of them (I don't remember which one right now) requires flat-top pistons, or the pistons will bang into the valves.. are the stock pistons flat, or domed? I just want a swap, not an engine rebuild Oh yeah... '90 F150 351W with fuel injection. E4OD trans. Also, do heads alone make a big difference by themselves, or should I change cams while I'm at it?
Thanks a lot everyone
Chuck
Chuck, all the heads you mentioned are good, reputable pieces. You might want to consider TFS heads also. I would personally start with the stuff up stream and down stream first. Elderbrock makes a good intake and throttle body and a good exhaust would be beneficial. I'm pretty sure your truck is a speed density system so be careful on cam choices unless you convert to a mass air system. Your speed density computer will limit mods to a certain degree.
Yes indeed, it's speed density; I guess I just missed the mass-air changeover (91? I think). I do already have a 3-inch exhaust/FMS headers and have been looking at some of the Ford Motorsport and BBK intake stuff. Seems like I should invest in the mass-air conversion, from what a lot of the manufacturers recommend. *sigh* those are expensive! Too bad I can't use some of the 302 stuff. Time to make the credit card companies glad they have me as a customer!
I've done quite a bit of research on small block heads and the TFS Twisted Wedge and GT40x are the best SMALL heads out there. The TFS heads may require special pistons, although I think you're safe with a stock/small can. I assume it's going into a truck so you'll want good torque characteristics. The Victors are good but they're more race oriented and will hurt low end power. It's better to have good heads than a big cam, it retains your driveability and also sets you up for the future when you want to upgrad the cam.
Check out 1.7 ratio roller rockers. They add about .030 valve lift with very little change in duration at .050 or overlap. Increases low to mid RPM performance without affecting drivability. Deninitely a "poor man's camshaft."
thanks for the 1.7 rocker hint. seems that a decent set of rockers is about $170-200...? quite comparable to a good cam when you add in new tappets, etc. i'm assuming that the stock rockers are 1.6? i know that's probably in the chilton or haynes, but i'm feeling lazy right now well, i'm still figuring on getting the mass-air conversion first. thanks again!
