Help with Fender

I replaced my driver side fender this weekend with one from JC Whitney. When I was all done I found that there is a 3/8" gap between the new fender and the hood (on the other side of the truck the the gap is about an 1/8". Before replacement both sides were equal. Any idea how to move the front of the fender toward the inside of the cab? Which fasteners need to be loosened? The rear end of the fender lines up fine with the door.

See the following 2 photos:

You will have to grind or elongate the hole where needed. And see if that helps. Also shift the hood a little to close gap or open both side will be 1/4 or so and not look bad.

I have had allot of trouble with JC and LMC with fitting/dents. I just buy aftermarket ones from local wrecking yard/Body shop now. If the generic fender is to far off or bent I just take back .

But for the most part 2 or 3 hours of playing to get just like want is common. I had 4 hours just playing with door when changed Hinges. Its you truck and you want it nice, so take time. Hey just keep us posted.

Your second photo seems to show where your problem is. The bracket to the core support may need to be loosened and moved toward the center of the truck. You can tell where it was originally by the washer marks etc.

Yup I had the same problem when I did my fenders. I just started the bolts into the fender on that bracket then pushed the bracket to the left tightened the top bolts then tightened the side bolts and it pulled it right in.

Angry fender problem

Thanks for your help. Filing and drilling may be what I have to do. Will have to start disassembling to find what is limiting the fender's movement.

The bracket with the washer marks won't move towards the interior of the truck. Its attached to the fender and the fender won't move (with the four bots shown loosened). If it helps her are the steps followed in assembly as I remember them:

1-Installed 2 bolts at top of fender near hood spring

2-tightened up plate with 2 petal pins behind headlight (tightening the 4 screws creates a sandwich between the plastic grille support fender and plate).

3-Tightened up two screws on RH bracket for plastic grille support fixing it in place

4- tightened fender bolts near bottom of door and near bottom of door jamb

5 - screw vertical under front end between radiator support - fender and andother piece of metal holing the clip nut.

6- fender screw into cowl

7- I think another screw into radiator support

8 - angle bracket at front top of fender with hood stop (shown in photo)

BTW, anyone have a better exploded view of this part of the truck than the one that comes in the ford manual? The one I have is pretty bad.

I forgot to mention on my fenders I had to severly oval out the holes on the front of the fenders where the pins go through and that fully took care of my problem. What I did was really tighten all the bolts except the 2 on the side of the front bracket that go into the fender and just let the bolts force the fender over and everything else stayed lined up.

Well after about 4 hrs work last night I corrected the fender. Did it as follows: loosened fender fasteners and elongated holes for locating pins in fender bracket behind headlight area. That gave me about a 1/4" of inward movement. Wasn't enough. Next, I managed to move the plate that the 2 pins are welded to, about 1/8" twds center of cab. The combination seemed to be enough. Also had to move the hood spring inward because with all the movement it was then hitting the top of the fender. See pictures below.

Thanks for all your help :-) BTW, I noticed I have 2 bolts and nuts left over :-( See picture. http://www.geocities.com/kalmia332001/100_1016.jpg I can't figure out where they went???? These kind of nuts look like they may belong in the engine compartment. Any ideas??

thanks

Hmm I'm not sure about the bolts but you could check I believe there are 2 bolts in the top of the inner fender similar to those, and 2 on the front of the inner fender into the radiator support, and maybe check your coolant and windsheild bottle brackets.

Figured it out.
-One bolt/nut fastens the plastic grille support to the radiator support
-One nut attaches to stud on lower part of headlight assy
-One bolt goes through top of fender apron into clip nut in fender.
thanks
