Hi Guys and Girls. I am a new member and a first time Ford truck owner.Just picked up a 2001 Ranger XLT about a month ago with only 48,000 miles. It's an excelent truck , I love it. It has a 2.5 manual shift.
It is the first Ford I've owned and dont know much about the engines as of yet. One thing I've noticed is that most messages in the forum talk about the 2.3 engine. Was the 2.5 a substandard engine and why did they change to a 2.3 ? how many years was it in production? and can someone explain exactly how the 8 sparkplugs fire in a four cylinder.
Thanks
Up until 1998, ford offered a 2.3 4 cyl, and then moved over to a 2.5. I think 2001 was the last year before they moved back over to a redesigned 2.3
Def NOT a substandard engine. It's a great block, very reliable.
I've heard a few different reasons whey they switched back over to the 2.3, most involving the Focus.
It's a little slow w/ an auto tranny, but has a lot of get up and go w/ a stick. Plenty to push around my fully built prerunner.
You'll love it. Great MPG, decent power, super reliable.
and can someone explain exactly how the 8 sparkplugs fire in a four cylinder.
Thanks
The dual spark plug system is actually kinda redundant to be honest. The fire at the same time and use the same timing and everything. Basically, I think Ford wanted to improve emissions on these engines so they installed dual plug systems. My primary coil somehow got disconnected some time ago and the only reason I noticed it was disconnected was the check engine light. I saw no power difference at the seat-of-the-pants dyno.
Congratulations on your new truck and welcome to FTE. You'll find the guys here very knowledgeable and always willing to help. You might want to also check out the 4 cylinder forum for details specific to your engine.
Thanks guys , I think you guys know what your talking about. Now I know more about my truck. Its good that is a low emishion engine .I just ordered a cover for the back, and a canoe rack, That Ranger is going to be a nice fishing truck.
Well thanks again
