2005 Mazda engine temp. question

I just bought a 2005 Mazda B2300 with the 2.3L engine. Its just a basic truck with a 5 speed. It only has 13k miles. I recently put my scangage on it and it shows the engine temp between 225-230 around town and 235-240 on the highway. It doesn't overheat by any means and the gauge sits just below halfway. Is this normal? I am used to my other vehicles staying under 200 degrees most of the time. Thanks!

With a properly operating 195 deg thermostat, I wouldn't expect the engine to be much over 200-205 F.

So, maybe consider having one of the parts stores scan the computer with another scan tool, if they have one that reads PID's & can look at the computers temp sending units numbers, or maybe look at engine temp with a remote IR temp probe, looking at the engine temp around the upper radiator hose area, at the engine block.

If the dash temp gauge isn't indicating a problem & you don't hear any rumblings from the heater core area or hoses, I might suspect the scangage calibration.

My 2003 ranger with 2.3 runs middle of gauge no issues. Will scan it when I get home also remember an engine gets hotter after you turn it off before it cools off.So take you temp reading while running and stay away from the exhaust side.

I can't say for sure that my scangage is right but on my other vehicles it reads in 195-200 range. As I said the truck runs fine and shows no sign of being hot. I took the readings while driving in town and on the highway. I'm getting 26+ mpg in mixed driving. Just thought that it was odd that it was that warm. I have a friend with a 2007 Focus that I'm going to check just to see where it runs. Thanks to all for the feedback.

If your reading temp through the scan guage you are reading the EEC temp sensor. That sensor may be off giveing your computor those readings.

Your sending unit for your guage is seporate, It may be the 1 that is correct.

With the warm weather you may not notice a problem with drivability but in cold weather your computor will think the engine is warmed up when it is not.
