I had the complete opposite happen with my '79 and a ford dealer. I told them it would break down while driving. They then told me that they had driven it to another city to get it to break down, and it never broke down on them. I then weant right out to the truck and saw there was 1 extra mile on the truck. They claimed they drove it at least 30 miles round trip. All the service adviser said was, "Thats what the tech told me."

With my new truck I wait while they do the work if its just fluids, and if it does need to stay then I check the miles and turn my stereo comletely off. They try and tell me it will take an hour and a half for an oil change. I tell them Ill wait right here, and make it quick. 30 minutes later its out and done. I would be highly pist off if there was extra millage or if they even touched my stereo system ($1700). Driving a customer's car is just bad buisness. Unless they state that it will need road testing there is no reason why there would be more than a mile or two.

thats not right that they put that many miles on your truck, but 20 years working at a service dept. and we test drive every vehicle(6 to 12 miles)

Its funny, the dealer in killeen Tx. told me they don't have enough time to test drive the vehicles, if the engine isnt warm when they start and your problem happens after it warms up you get a big fat "cannot duplicate problem". To this day and 5 "new" trucks since 2000 I have not found a trust worthy dealership-Ford,Chevy or Dodge!! Its a crying shame.

Ok, but it depends on what I'm doing also! I too test drive most every vehicle, but, I won't use a customers vehicle for personal use nor shop use! Only to verify a comlaint and repair. 10-20 mi. may not be out of reason, but some diesel work does require a lot of driving, but 100 mi. on a gas and no customer knowledge? come on, know wonder some of us look like a$$##%&% to the customer!!! AND LEAVE THE CUSTOMERS RADIO ALONE OR SHUT IT OFF!

The whole day went by and they said that they had to order fluid...which I think is stupid they don't have on hand.

Anyways, I get my truck back the next day:
1. My milage was 84,868 and they recorded 84,875
2. My trip meter was reset due to "the battery disconnect"
3. The Milage Out was 84,984.

I'm no expert, but I don't belive it takes 116 miles and a quarter tank of gas to do these changes. I brough it up to the sup and demanded a reason why there was these "extra Miles" and the "false record" of the original. I only had to 85k for the warranty and only have 16 upon leaving.

Apparently they took it to lunch, and down to the part warehouse. I got the service compt but the fact is you have to be careful that the service dpt. isn't putting more miles than nessesary for those still under wrty.!

The last job I had in AZ was for a large Mercedes-Benz dealer as the QC tech. Depending on the repairs and the history of the vehicle, I often made up to one hour test drives to verify a complaint and or the fix of a complaint; when that was required I did put five gal. of fuel in the tank upon return to Dealership. Since I lived 20 miles North of the shop I drove home for lunch so the car could sit in my driveway and approximate the customers problem. Then back to shop, up on drive on hoist to check the underside of vehicle

Yes, they knew, and I always posted a lengthy discription of the time and miles I put on the car. Many customers were surprised we would spend the time to verify a complaint.

Makes me want to hide a GPS in it so you can check the mileage, speed, time stopped and where they went in it.

I can understand a test drive for engine/driveline problems but not anything else.

all jobs should be test driven. i could change oil and rotate tires and if a rear wheel was a little off balance and i move it to front you may feel it in driver seat. if i don't test drive and you pick up truck , two things will happen. one you will be in managers office wanting your work for free and 2nd you will be posting on message board how i don't now what i'm doing and that i stole your money.

I had no complaints the truck ran fine...just needed new fluids. i see your point ford7445 but what they did with my truck was wrong either way you look at the coin. under no circumstance is a customer's vehicle to be taken to lunch over a fluid flush....

So what mileage would that be, 1 mile or 2, I can live with that. What the OP posted was way beyond, I hope that you can even see that.

i said from the begining that was way to much. i have a loop i drive one exit up highway 2.5 miles and back side road about 3.5 miles. knowone likes somene driving there truck around but i can tell you no matter why someone brings there vehecle in, if they notice something when the leave it's my problem. many years ago i replaced a seatbelt and the customer came back and said they had a oil leak since there last repair and wanted to speak to owner. i would think most people here are ok but some people are just nuts.
