It's illegal to do what!!???

Thanks for the feedback... I fully agree that you should not leave your vehicle running with the keys in it.

94van, I was in P.G county on 301. And he specifically said MD State Law. Oh well, I guess I will just shut up and color. I will however find out what this law is.

I think the funniest part was that there were two cruisers, the first one was stopped in front of my truck and the second was about 100 feet away in front of the store. The cop driving car #2 got out and walked in to the store with his cruiser running and unattended. All I could think is something my dad always told me as a kid "Do as I say, Not as I do".

Looks like you were in my neck of the woods.....

I'm here watching the TV news this morning, and this subject just came up. There IS a MD law. Must be something fairly new, as lots of people are now getting tickets for having their vehicles running unattended.

Seems every time there is a budget crunch, they start writing tickets for unusual reasons/laws that were overlooked before.

It's illegal to do what!!???

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 03-Dec-02 AT 08:44 AM (EST)]Let me play another part of this.
depending on the situation ,late at night parking, lot empty, high crime area! Who knows ?
Maybe they thought you were planning a fast get away! might be why the second cruiser went to the front of the store, and he went inside!
To chk the store.
Yes ,long idling periods cause higher pollution, trucks, cars!
someone dreamed it up and now we have to abide by it!
I guess or becareful how we use our conviences !
Just my $.02

It's illegal to do what!!???

I believe that the law in Texas is that it is illegal to have an unattended vehicle with the engine running. When I read the law a few years ago, I didn't find any exclusion for trucks - big or little, buses, or any other vehicle.

I agree in principle, that leaving your truck running unattended is dumb, except for special cases. The problem is, many people do it because they are lazy, don't won't to sweat 5 minutes after getting back into the vehicle, or some other half-reason.

I observed a Ford(unfortunately) pickup run off a parking lot by itself once, and into a ditch just before entering a busy highway. The lady driver stopped at a convenience store and ran in to get something. She either forgot to put it in park or it jumped out - whichever. The second worse mistake, and most common of all is NOT using the parking brake, which costs nothing to use, but has immeasurable value in the event it is needed.

The only time I leave my vehicle running is on a very cold day at my home, in my driveway or garage, or if I am moving trash from the house into the pickup area.

It's illegal to do what!!???

This reminds me when I was a lot younger. I had an old Dodge Power Wagon 4sp. I left it running while getting coffee at a UniMart about 6AM (middle of winter). I ran into a friend (A real jokester) He said "Hey man your trucks rolling away!" I just laughed a little, and said "Yea sure" So when I went up front to pay, sure enough my truck was gone! It rolled about 100 feet backwards, and was sitting in the middle of the main street in town blocking the road. If it wasn't for the curb it would of hit the hardware store. Luckly it was early and not to many cars out yet, or I might of hit one. Nothing was damaged, however I did have to endure endless abuse from my friends that found out. (What are friends for, right). So the moral of the story is (If somebody says "your truck is rolling away" you should at least look)

Thats my story, and I'm stickin to it.

Groundrat, the cop thing happens here too. i used to work the graveyard shift at an 24 hr reasurant. alot of the local cops would come infor dinner around 3-4 am. Usually all 4 cruzers would be left running in the lot. All year long.

There are all kinds of laws that make things illegal that are not illegal. I know the state of Tx, according to our city cops, has passed legislation agianst running the neon lights. You can run them so long as you cannot see the light source (i.e. the glowing dice is illegal cuz they see the dice that are glowing and the neon strips that you can put on your dash or under your vehicle or the ones that go on gear shifters, so long as they can see the light source) If it's just the glow showing it's ok. They're is a bit of a dispute between the cops here about the lights that you put on your valve stems. Some say they're illegal and some say that they can't get you for it becuz some stock theft deterrant systems have a light that shines through the rims on cars equipped with it. I don't know but I think it's bull. They will always stop you for blue and red here becuz they try to scare you by telling you that they could get you for impersonating a peace officer. That's what they told my friend when we got pulled over on the college campus by a city cop one night... Basically, it's anything they can do to take away our right to choose to do something or not.

It's illegal to do what!!???

just my 2 cents for the person--ken i believe it was that posted about runaway vehicles without a person to control them with just using a car starter and letting it run a majority of the systems on the market today will only run for 10-25 mins and then auto shut down and besides to my knowledge most remotes have the engine off control too for when you think it has run long enough so these could prevent accidents and i hate to bring it up but with the gm cars and vans with the onstar option ---onstar can just kill the engine with the touch of a button but to my knowledge ford doesnt use onstar

It's illegal to do what!!???

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 04-Dec-02 AT 01:00 AM (EST)]All I do is start my truck in the morning before heading off to school to let it warm up either in front of the house or in the driveway. I don't think there's a law like that over here in Washington State. It seems slightly ridiculous to incorporate a law like that. I mean, I can understand if there are children inside or something like that, but if the doors are locked and it can't be stolen (such as in the case of a remote start) it really seems ridiculous.

It's illegal to do what!!???

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 04-Dec-02 AT 02:32 AM (EST)]i used to work at an audio and security shop and all of the remote car starters we sold or ive seen would shut off the moment you press the brake when u got into the car. this means that in order to actually drive the car you would have to insert the key into the ignition and start it that way. this would also prevent any "runaway vehicles" which seems most unlikely or almost impossible with this feature. ive seen standard transmissions slip but never an automatic. ive also never heard of an incident where a remote starter caused a runaway car situation. if this were to happen there would be plenty of lawsuits against the remote starter companies to ban them all together. these precautions have been taken when developing the remote starters by adding options that would make it nearly impossible for this to happen. im also very certain that in the oncoming production of cars/trucks there will be a optional remote start. i agree that most of the fuss is caused by emissions. all an idling car is doing is putting carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and wasting natural resources. this is just my opinion. :7
