Started a lower intake manifold gasket job. I can't seem to remove the distributor. Yes, the hold down bolt/clamp is off. I've even stood over it and tried to pull it out. Is there a safe way to pry it out?
This is probably the first time the distributor has been removed on this beast.
try taking your plugs out and rotating the crank a few times to release any pressure
on the system, and also try a torque bar on the crank and rock it back and forth at the same time you try to pry the dis out.
Even though I've disconnected 99% of all the electrical and vacum hoses, I was considering moving the crank. I kinda hate to though since I'd like to set in right back down into the crank once I'm done and not have to worry about timing and what-not.
Thanks for the tips! I'll try rocking the crank and pulling it out (need to wait until son gets home).
Well dont completely crank the crank all the way around just rock it alittle and see
what happens, it couls be just binding enought to keep it from dislodging.
Snap On and OTC, if not others, make a slide hammer attachment that slips under the dist housing and lets you slap it right out. The o ring has hardened, or some clown glued the o ring in. Any older mechanic will have that tool. Used a lot back in the breaker point days.
The timing won't move unless you rotate the engine with the distributor out. Take a pencil and make a mark on the block and distributor shaft for alignment.
I hope I don't have to pull mine for a very long time! When I got this truck it rattled like a diesel and had no power, timing was set at 6*. It took forever just to get it to turn a little bit.
You don't have to "hit" the dist. If you do you'll be a sorry soul. It's a cast alum housing and can be quite fragile when beat on. Adapt the slide hammer, find/borrow whatever the dist pulling attachment. Use a new o ring, grease it well, it will come out again easily. There's no other good way. Wood shims and pry bars (one on ea side) have been known to work...........
