I recently purchased a 1983 f150 with a 302 v8 and automatic with overdrive. The privious owner had just installed a performer series edelbrock 1406 4brl carb and intake manifold on it. I was cruising thru the edelbrock web site and notice that it said these carbs are not compatiable with the automatic overdrive. Does anyone know why? and what kind of problems will this have. should I take this carb off? and if so what would I put in place? the previous owner also took off all the emissions stuff, all I see is the PVC and the canister on the fender well, oh and the cat too. I guess this is OK since we are not subject to emission checks in my area. thanks guys

Iam thinking that the 1406 (I have one) is a Non Emissions rated carb. Not for EGR type applications. The AOD trans thing is shure different......
I believe it has to do with trannies that have TV cables to control shifting if yours shifts fine (goes into overdrive) everything should be o.k. It might also shift hard if the TV cable is disconnected. It will feel like it has a very aggressive shift kit if this happens it WILL damage the trans. The automatics are supposed to have throttle body fuel injection. There may be a way to hook up a TV cable to it but I've never tried it, most of my vehicles are 5spds.
It may have to do with the automatic kickdown linkage. Check with LOKAR, they may make an adapter or a cable to make the AOD hook up to the Edelbrock carb. Check lokar.com
Thanks guys! I wrote to edelbrock and they said that the carb would work fine as long as I got the proper brackets and hardware from LOKAR. So I wrote to LOKAR and they gave me the part#s of what I need to make things work right. The Items I needed are a Hi tech AOD kickdown cable and a spring and bracket kit. The folks at LOKAR are very helpful. Thanks
Have you installed the Lokar parts yet? I'm going to have to do this to my truck pretty soon, and would like to know if the parts work out. Got the same tranny and carb, so its probably the same parts.
The parts have been installed now and the truck shifts properly, much better than before. The TV cable must have been removed when the new carb was put on and replaced with the kickdown arm. From all the info I have read, you must have the TV cable to make the AOD trans work properly, and after seeing the difference I am positive this is true.
Yeah, I went ahead and got the lokar parts before i installed a rebuilt aod in my truck. Haven't tested the kickdown yet because my autozone transmission can't find second gear. stays in first till about 40 mph then slams into drive, or sometimes overdrive. that's autozones problem thou, becaue I told them they were paying to have it fixed. Just glad to know the lokar parts worked for you.
Adjustment is key I have found with that kickdown cable TV.When I first hooked it up mine would not shift out of first gear. then it would shift thru all the gears before I reached 25mph and into overdrive by 35mph, now it is pretty close to perfect so I can fine tune it.
My problem wasn't adjustment, it was in the transmission. I tried all forms of adjustment with no results, so I told autozone to take it to their shop, and they said it needed complete rebuild. The quality parts you get these days...
on my dad's 84 f-150 with a 302 and a c-6 4x4, he wants me to install a 4 barrel manifold and carb, im gonna use the edelbrock 1406 , but what do i need to do to hook up the kickdown linkage on it, by the way emissions is no concern

on a quiet night your can hear the chevys rusting away
with a C-6 tranny all you need is a part/linkage that bolts to the carb and connects to the tranny rod, it costs about 20-25$ and I think i've seen it for sale at jeg's and summit racing. my local parts store had it in stock for my 1406 a few years back.....
