My battery is drained if the RPM's go over 2000. I had the alternator replaced/repaired. The battery charges when idling, but if there is any drain on it, it looses it's charge. Could it be a relay? Battery is 10 months old. Could it be the battery? Checked what I could see of the cables and terminals. My husband doesn't know much about electrical problems. I don't want to take it to the dealer, or a repair place if I can help it. I don't want them to just start replacing parts, and it not be the problem. That is why I had the battery and alternator replaced 10 months ago. My husband took the alternator to a place that rebuilds them, and they replaced the voltage regulator on it this morning. I am at a loss as to what to do next. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Yes, I have had new optimas only last 6 weeks. Just because a part is new, doesn't mean it's any good. An internal short is a pain to diagnosis, however if the battery dies in short order without a load, it's probably shorted. They don't generally test them when replacing under warranty, so I'd try to get a new one.
Then the procedure is, Check the out put on the alternator. Use a multi-meter, positive lead on the bolt the battery lead connects to and negative on the alternator case. Record this voltage.
Then move the positive lead to the battery. Record this voltage, it should only be 0.2-0.4 volts less. Anything more than that is positive wire issue.
Return the Positive lead to the alternator bolt that's connected to the battery lead. And move the negative to any metal spot on the motor. There should be no change in voltage. Then move the neg lead to the neg battery terminal, once again 0.2-0.4 loss is normal.
Lastly, Put the leads on the battery and start the motor, from idle to about 2000 rpms, voltage should in crease about 1-2volts. If it doesn't your voltage reg is shot.
