The fluid should be a bright pink/red when you wipe it on a white paper towel. It should not be brownish or smell burnt. To completely fill an auto tranny, put in about 80-90% of the recommended amount of fluid, start it up, keep your foot on the brake and flop between D and R several times to work out the air. Then check the the fluid and top off...then go back to the "flop" some more...check the fluid again...rinse, repeat....
