I have a 98' ranger regular cab, with a 3.0L 5-speed manual 2wd, with 165,000 kilometers. My check engine light has come on and the code was P0401. I have replaced all the vacume lines, cleaned out the throtle body EGR valve, replaced the DPFE, vacume regulator, throtle position sensor but the check engine came back on. I have also noticed that it idles at 1100rpm, and when I come to a stop it will run at 1500 to 1600rpm for 10 secs then idle down to 1100rpm again, whats going on its starting to get expensive and frusturating.
If you still have the P0401, check out the EGR systems VSV, as it actually directly controls the EGR valves operation, by applying the vacuum pulses that cause it to open & close.
So if the VSV is acting out, or if the computers electrical operating signals to it are corrupt for some reason, it'll cause the EGR valve to act out.
If all that is ok, check out the IAC, as it's often a culprit in idle speed problems.
Also be sure to check out our "Tech Info" thread, located atop this forums thread listing page, it has lots of helpful info links there, for we wrench turners!!!! Good EGR system & IAC info there.
