I have a 98 F150, V8, 4.6 I'v been looking on the web site and hearing every one talking about codes. Can i get a code machine and what is the price for one. Im taking it goes in the data link under the dash. Any help is a appreciated.
Hey there. You can buy a code scaner from just about any auto parts store. I have seen them go for about $125, on up. These will pull your codes, and clear the ecm. But if you need one to do service and repair, get ready to put down about $3000 plus. I have a MATCO Unit that i like very well I can see what the computer sees with its display screen and functions. Look at what years you will be working on, so you can get the one that best fits what you will be doing. cars today have computer controled brakes, transmissions, body operations such as door locks, heating and air conditioner functions.
There are some programs available for laptops and PDA's. You can purchase the software and an adaptor that hooks the computer port on your vehicle to the serial port on a laptop. The software not only gives the codes, but gives the interpretation and readout of what it means.
Costs run between $165 to $325 depending on what you get. Try a site like "google.com" and type in a search for OBD II software. You'll get all kinds of suppliers, etc.
Read a review of the software and hookup in a computer mag that said it really works.
