I just rebuilt my 400 in my '79 bronco. I have the Edelbrock Performer intake and a Carter 625 cfm carb. The truck starts up and idles perfectly, but has a hesitation / stumble off idle, leaving from a stop. The guy who rebuilt it is ordering a kit from Carter that has different jets and rods. He believes going up 1-2 jet sizes will improve the off-idle problem.
Could be the thing to do. It sure won`t take long to find out, and even go higher if need be. Carter/edlebrock carbs are very easy to work on. Maby the accererator pump setting is not good. If you have the tuneup guide that comes with new carbs it is very easy to get it right.
Some times going smaller on the jets is the thing to do also, just depends. Have a look at the plugs after driving for a while. They will let you get it right.
Don`t forget to have a good advance curv going for you also!!

mmm..sounds like what happened to my 514 in my 83. The 750 edelbrock works basically the same way as the carter, and a richer metering rod/jet combination should take care of it. Just read the manual that comes with the carb to help with selection.
