I have some american racing chrome wheels on my 93 F150 that I really like that are kind of old. They polish up nicely, but there is some rust pitting and they seem to rust very quickly in wet weather. I live in upstate NY, so that just goes with the territory.
Is there anything I can do to repair the pitting, or keep them from rusting other than polishing them every week? Is there such a thing as re-chroming?
Yes you can have them chromed, if they are aluminum they will need to be copper plated first for the chrome to stick well. You could also clear coat the wheels.
I have recently read that brake fluid removes rust, but it will probably stain polished aluminum. However, I have always had good luck using pencil erasers to remove rust.
By the sounds of it you have steel wheels that are chromed. You can have them sent out to be re chromed. Chroming steel is alot cheaper than chroming aluminum.
honestly I have had parts chromed on my show car, and your much better off buying another set of wheels than getting those rechromed, becouse to rechrome they have to remove the existing chrome then repolish the metal and start over again, sell them and get a new set.
