Engine ID

Greetings,
I am new to the forum and have recently purchased a '55 F-100. Seller told me it has a 301/302 set up(?) Engine is supposed to be a 302. How do I ID this motor to know what I have? Where is the engine ID # located? I know very little about Ford stuff. Any help is appreciated!
Regards,
Eric

there is a casting number and date code stamped above the starter on right side of block. get that then we can look it up, see exactly what you have.

If it's a roller 302, the casting numbers are on the driver's side in the lower rear corner, next to the bellhousing. The date code is on the flat spot behind the starter, facing straight down. This is a number/letter/number(s) combo.
