I have a 2000 4wd excursion (v10) with a vibration issue. It seems to be coming from the rear as i can feel it the seat and not in the steering wheel. It becomes very annoying to me at speeds above 60 mph, but i think it's there below 60. Initially i had the tires rebalanced and rotated from back to front. This didn't change anything. They've been rotated a couple times since, again with no change. The vehicle had the original shocks (80000miles) and they were worn out, so i replaced them. This didn't help. I then started to focus on drivetrain. I replaced the u-joints because they're easy and cheap. This didn't help. i've inspected everything to the best of my abilities and there doesn't appear to be anything loose or out of the ordinary.
Next, I'm thinking of swapping the tires off my work truck (f250), which has no vibration issues, with the excursion just to eliminate any tire or rim problems (excursion has firestone steel x). If this doesn't work, i'll probably bring it to the dealer and hopefully they can figure it out without it costing me to much. I assume they would look at suspension issues and other drivetrain issues (driveshaft, etc.).
Does anybody have any other ideas that i could look at before bringing it to dealer.
You can jack up one rear wheel at the time, put the truck in gear and let that tire spin at an idle to see if it is causing vibration or if there is a bent wheel. BE SURE and apply brakes before returning vehicle gear selector to the park position. Let it down and do the other side. If it's a bent wheel or an out of round tire you'll see it. If it's a bad bearing you should be able to hear it. Be sure you have someone competant inside the vehicle while doing these test should the jack slip for some reason or other. AndyMc
Badly chopped tires. Apparently, the chop was there when i bought the vehicle. It seems like the first thing that i should have figured out, but when i bought it from the dealer it appeared to have fairly new tires, and I made the mistake of assuming the tires were good because the dealer inspected them. Rides nice now; put on new firestone transforce. I'm trying to be extra **** about rotating tires more frequently, although i'm not sure what caused the chop previously.
