I have a 68 T-bird that I'm looking to put a 351W into. The car has a C6 transmission already in it. If I put this engine in the car would I have to switch out the trans?
Different bellhousing pattern. Your best bet is to get a small block c-6, which will bolt up to the 351W. The big block C-6 that's in there now is VERY marketable at swap meets, etc. DON'T just scrap it out.
A small-block C-6 is your best bet, it would be a direct bolt in. An AOD could be made to fit, but it might not hold up well behind a 351. An E4OD could also be made to fit and would certainly be strong enough, but it requires an electronic controller.
Would it make much of a differance if I put in a 351W big or small block? The cars weight is about 4000 lbs and I'm not going to be towing anything. A small block C6 should work in either ease right?
The 429 is as expensive to repair then it is to buy another engine not to mention it gets the 8 mpg for stock performance. This car is also driven daily. What kind of trucks come with a 351W?
If you don't like the mileage on a 429, you probably won't like the 460 either, but it's your best bet. 460s are plentiful, give a ton of torque and are a direct bolt in. A fresh one should give you better mileage than you've been experiencing. If you can't or won't stick with the big block engines, that leaves you with the 400M or the 351M, which use the same bolt pattern. Problem is, the motor mounts, etc. are probably not going to work and you'll probably need a trick oil pan. If you weight the cost of conversion against the fuel mileage gains, you may be better off just rebuilding the 429.
I'll start looking into the 460 a little . If a 351 gets about 12.5 mpg is it really worth it to put a computer in it? It only saves about 1 mpg right?
MPG is really a big variable, depending mostly on how close to the carb your foot stays.
I would suggest a 460. No reason, just more displacement
