We are on a cross country trip and the tow command is driving me nuts i,m getting trailer disconnected a lot so i,m thinking of putting another brake controller on to make it home my question is when i hookup the new controller do i unhook the tow command one
If you still have the 05, I think you are having a ground problem on the trailer. How old is the trailer. You don't want to get rid of the tow command. It's the best system out there! I have an '05 F250 6.0 and just returned from a 10, 450 mile trip from east to west coast and back! Loved the tow command. Nary a problem with it. I've been towing a trailer of one kind or another since 1970. This IS THE BEST!
Do you have a regular tow behind or a 5th wheel? Disconnect from truck and put an ohmeter from the ground pin of the trailer connector to the frame. You should read short curcuit (or 0 ohms). If you don't, you have a bad ground on trailer and whatever controller you use, it won't work right. If you are dragging a regular ball hitch trailer, you CAN NOT rely on the ball to provide you with a good ground!
its an 05 pulling a 26 foot travel trailer last year we had no problem with it at all i'll check out the ground but it sure seems to act weird when we take off in the morning we may go 5 mi befre being bombarded with trailer disconnected then it continues for the rest of the day

Seems the early 05's have a problem with this more than any other year. There are a few posts on here about this with the early 05's and some have found replacing it with an 06 or later controller helps. Most of the problems are no braking under 15 mph and they don't seem to get the power that the others have.
I've changed all the way from the 7way cord to the brakes themself and still get that darn warning and beeping . I have even went as far to a RV dealer hooked up a brand new fiver and took the entire set-up to my dealer to prove that its a problem. I can't get Ford to admit theres a problem with it or that they even know how to repair it. I have even offered to pay for the new controller if it didn't fix the problem but they seem to ignor that. I'm to the point of a differnt dealer or removing it and install a P3 in its place.
Try the plug connector first and the ground for sure and see if you can fix the simple things first.
Yes you can dissconnect it and install an after market controller . You will have to have the dealer reprogram the truck or you will get an error message every time you start it but it won't beep going down the road.
