Well, haven't done it myself, but there are tools that claim to make this possible. I've replaced the part in the oil pan (lower half) and that is hard enough to do off the engine that I'd say doing the the upper half with the crank in would be real, real hard, tool or no tool.
How bad is it leaking? The rope seals really won't seal the way modern engines' seals do. They just slow down leakage.
Is this a flat V8 or a flat 6?
