Is there a bulletin on the '05 "Tow/OD"? I've run with it and without it and frankly I can't tell any difference other than the light on the dash.
Perhaps I'm not pulling enough weight (7000#) or climbing extreme grades. I've made several trips to Ohio and North Carolina from NH pulling the trailer so we're not talking climbing the Rockies but still there are times (West Virginia) where the truck gets a little wound up trying to climb some grades, but turning OD on/off doesn't seem to change anything.
Anyway, I thought I read someplace here that there's an issue with some of the switches where nothing actually does change (other than the light comes on).
Probably the easiest way to tell if it's working is to go down hill with your load and apply the brakes. It it's working the engine will shift down, an the RPMs will climb, to assist in the braking. If the tow\haul is off or not working the engine will not assist in the braking.
Something is wrong with yours. I bought my 06 in November and on the second day hooked my 12ft enclosed trailer to it and tried tow/haul. My trailer is way to light to use it. If yours were working properly, believe me you would know.
So I take it Tow/Haul mode has little impact on climbing grades...it's only useful when your slowing down going down a grade?
I don't have any hauling scheduled in the near future but I'll try the downhill test on the next run. Perhaps I just lack an understanding of what it's supposed to do and it's working fine.
I have to say when I'm pulling the trailer I sometimes forget it is even back there (unless climbing a steep grade). It beats the hell out of the Hemi I traded in for it!
TOW Haul Mode on a 5R110w is NOT the same as the OD lock out on the 4R100!......you can NOT lock out OD on a 5R110W Torqshift unless you down shift to 3rd!
The tow haul mode via the stem mounted button will let you select "drive" (D) and the exceptional Tow Haul mode to give a different (and better!) shift pattern---it will also engage engine braking (via torque converter lock up) on down hill sections ONLY after you tap the brakes!
Empty or loaded you will know it works. In tow mode it holds all the gears longer, try from a start and it should hold 1st longer and shift firmer and so on till you get up to cruise speed, and as stated it will down shift, almost like you physicaly drop it down a gear yourself when you go to slow down using the brakes.
