Question overheating

hey guys i've been away for a while but just recently i went on a trip to the coast and i pulled a 30 foot goose neck camper with the really tall part over the bed. on the way there and back i had problems with my truck getting hot. i was only running in 4th at 55-60 and i was still running otter than average for pulling a trailer. i dont normally have trouble even in od. any body got any ideas??? and also what is a safe egt temp to shut my truck off at?

water temp is running hot or egt temps running hot?

If it is the water temp it could be a thremostat stuck closed or open.
Egt temp could be a changed amount of fuel getting dumped in the engine

The factory temp gage isn't very acurate but as long as you were in the N-o-r-m-a-l range you are OK. How high did it get?

The EGT's are safe to about 1250F (probe installed pre-turbo). 950F if the probe is installed post turbo. You can go as high as 1400F (pre turbo) for less than 1 minute or so.

hey jim my EGT's were running fine. they averaged about 850 with only a couple of hills getting over 1000. my probe is in the exhaust manifold on the drivers side in the back behind the last cylinder. it was the motor itself that was hot it ran at the L in NORMAL and just a little hotter on a couple of hills. whenever i got to towns and slowed down it returned to the between the N and O where it normally sits in like 10 minutes, but within 2-3 minutes of highway it got hot again. it didnt change much just kinda stayed there but it has never run hot like that before. it did get HOT one time on the way down there. i wasnt paying attention and i set cruise on 60 and i looked down and the needle was getting close to the end of the middle part of the gauge but i let off and it cooled down a little

How about coolant level?
What are you at now that you are back and can let it sit overnight?
Just my nickel minus three pennies.

You might not be overheating but, Like I said the dash gage isn't very acurate....the fluctuations in temp you described usually an indication the radiator is plugged. You can try to back flush it and see what you get. If it's the original, then you probably owe it a new one anyway.

My fan clutch takes some resistance to make it spin. Not very much though. You should be able to hear it kick in too.

I can always hear mine the best at 1700 rpm's are so when its on.

Yeah, that's pretty much how mine is aswell Andy.

I've never had a fan clutch malfunction because it was always engaged. Yhe problem has always been when it won't engage.
