hi guy's new here with old ? losing coolant but not overheating and only losing it when towing so egr cooler or oil cooler or the dreaded head gasket?? any help would be great. Thanks for the advice.
Don't know what year truck you have but the older truck's coolant tank MAX/MIN marks are wrong. If the coolant level is higher then a 1/4 inch below the MIN mark then it will probably puke. FMC has a recall for placing a new MAX/MIN sticker on the coolant tank. Keeping it at the new level solved my puking problem.
I recently went on an 800 mile trip from MD to WV hauling 10,000 lbs. When I got there it had puked out about a 1.5 quarts of coolant but no overheating occurred. I had filled it to the MAX mark prior to leaving. Prior to returning I filled it to halfway between the MAX and MIN marks. It puked but not as much. I have a friend with an 05 truck that has the new MAX/MIN sticker. I took a felt tip pen and marked the new MAX/MIN levels on my tank. Then I went on a 1,500 mile trip to MI running 70 to 80 MPH most of the time and had no pucking issues. Granted I was not towing anything but I had the coolant at the proper level and each time I stopped I checked the level. It was not even close to the cap.
Had the same problem with my 04 PSD FX4. It blew coolant out of the recovery tank whenever I towed my 12K 5th wheel. It ended up being the head gasket. Under warranty thankfully.
