I recently purchased a '94 F350 with the 7.3. I plan on putting my '81 stepside body on the frame sometime in the years to come, but I would like to know a little bit more about these engines before I get myself into anything major. What exactly is IDI and what is the difference between the Powerstroke? How can I tell which I have? Which is better? Things to look for? Anything and everything you can tell me about the 7.3 will be greatly appreciated and make my project go much smoother.
IDI= indirect injection, mechanical injector pump injects fuel into a prechamber in the head. Higher compression ratio than PS. The only thing electric about the engine itself is the fuel shut off and cold advance soliniod in the injector pump. The 94 were available with factory turbo. If you have an injector pump with steel lines running to an injector on each cylinder you have an IDI, powerstroke is all electic, computers and such, and way more expensive to buy parts for, fuel injected directly into each cylinder at extremely high pressures.
Yup, that sounds like you hit the nail on the head on that one KJLYPW.
'94 (non PS)-earlier....IDI= InDirect Injection
'94 PS-on......DI= Direct Injection
But in 94 you could have a natural aspirated 7.3 IDI, a 7.3 turbo IDI or a 7.3 Power Stroke engine.
Right now I do not have it in front of me, but the 8th digit in the VIN number tells what engine you have.
F is a Power Stroke
1 is a 6.9 diesel
and if I remember right K is a 7.3 IDI natural aspirated and M is a turbo 7.3 IDI
Dave, you are right K Is 94 IDI turbo, M is 94 IDI NA.
Boss50, If you have a big black box right in the middle of you engine that says either DI or Direct Injection (can't remember), that is a Stroke. You could have a VIN "M" that some one has added a turbo to, as well.
