I just put a 4" MBRP T-409 SS turbo back exhaust and a gauge cluster (exhaust temp, tranny temp, boost) on my '05 PSD primarily to lower my exhaust temps while towing. My buddy sees it and says, "It looks great. But did you know that now you need to put a tuner/programmer on it because the computer needs to be reprogrammed due to better exhaust flow, lower back pressure, etc.?" He said that the motor would run too lean having the 4" exhaust and not reprogramming the injectors.
Is this true? If so, what tuners/programmers are best for the 6.0? I'd say 60% of our miles are around town with the kids, 20% are unloaded on the highway, and 20% are on the highway towing our 8000 lbs trailer.<O</O
I was trying to avoid any mods that would give the dealer a reason to void my engine warranty, but I also don't want to set my rig up for failure by not making necessary mods based on my current setup.<O</O
Are there any other mods I need to consider (read: "necessary" - there are LOTS I'm considering...) now that I have a 4" lift, 35" tires and 4" exhaust????
IMHO, no. There are enough factory sensors and variable parameters in the stock computer system to compensate for the exhaust upgrade. All of my experience comes from racing Mustangs with EFI and superchargers, and tuning the EEC 4 and EEC 5 Ford systems. Exhaust only isn't enough to need to recalibrate/tweek the stock computer. How do you like the exhaust? I just ordered the Magnaflow s.s. turbo back system for my 05 X.
I like the MBRP so far. Great sound at idle and very quiet at speed - even quieter than stock at speed. There seems to have been a noticeable but not overwhelming increase in power, especially accelerating off the line.
Next weekend will be the first trip towing the trailer, so that will be the first real test in my eyes.
Exhaust and intake mod typically do not need recalibration of the PCM. However, going the other way...tuners and chips almost always require the addition of exhausts/downpipes and such.
