I'd suggest fiddling with the ignition key switch - moving it forward or back just a bit - to see if that fixes your problem. When the gauges don't work, do the radio & heater fan & wipers also not work? Or is it JUST the gauges that don't work?

The ignition switch problem is a common one. If wiggling the key does not fix the problem, then I would suspect the guage regulator that is mounted on the circuit board of the cluster.

The common problem with the switch I have seen on several of these trucks is the spring detent is not strong enough, especially in cold weather. It will not return from springing it over to start, and a light wiggle with your hand will usually bring it to the correct run position. When it happened to me, the first thing I noticed was the blower motor and the wipers would not work.
