300-6 timing

Where are you guys base timing your 300-6s? Base timing on my HD engine with no emissions, just distributor advance and PCV, is speced at 10 degrees BTDC. Is there any repeatable benefit to advancing any farther than that? My truck is pretty noisy at highway speeds and I don't know if I could hear it pinging if it was. Just wondered if anybody noticed any increase in MPG/performance at any other settings. BTW I have stock everything (carb, cam, ignition, etc).

The main thing is to set it on total timing. Set to to max out around 36* with the vac advance unplugged. Most of the time it will land you at 8-12 anyway. There's lots of things you can do to Ford distributors, that most people dont really need an aftermarket unit.

How are you measuring total timing? The hash marks on the timing cover only go to 14 degrees and then you run into the water pump!

You need a timing lite with the dial, or readout on the handset. When you rev it up to full advance, adjust the dial as you line up with the timing marks with the zero mark. Then you just read the timing lite. The light will be flashing at 0, and the timing lite will read your full advance number.
