I just got back from a 2200 mile trip to myrtle beach and back, most of the trip through the mountains. I gotta say I'm very impressed with the power of this truck compared to my 7.3. It would pull the hills at 65mph with no problem. Averaged about 11mpg pulling a 10k fifth wheel.
While this is good, I thought it should be a little better. I'm thinking 4in turbo back exhaust, EGT gauge, and a tuner. What's the best tuner for towing? Is the stock air cleaner on an 05 OK or should I go with something else?
Thats pretty good mpg for 10k pounds, especially through the hills. You need to talk to matt at spartan diesel for a sct tuner. Pretty much everyone here uses him and/or recommends him.
my 03 is at the dealer getting a new turbo and intercooler .. by the way the turbo is fine but its a bad mamjam stock.. and split the intercooler after a 5k road trip pulling a 39ft 5TH wheel and they want to replace the turbo.. and i have a feeling when i get it back its going to have had a Viasectoame ( spelling wrong but you get the jest )

Thanks for any advice!

Yes that is pretty good MPG for that load and speed. As for mods, the exhaust is a good choice to lower EGT, and EGT, Trans Temp and Fuel pressure gauges are a good start, as for a tuner the product of choice is the SCT XcalII with Custom Tunes from Matt at Spartan Diesel Technologies. Give him a call.
You also may want to think about the rear fuel crossover line and and EGR cooler up-pipe delete.
dont know much about the fuel crossover line but the up pipe is where you basically eliminate anything going into the egr cooler. Egr cooler failure is a somewhat common problem with the 6.0L when the egts start to climb high. As soon as the warrenty runs out on my truck it will be new studs and the up pipe delete without hesitation.
What is the deal on the fuel crossover line and the up pipe delete?
Thanks
Baron
The fuel enters each head at the front and is dead ended at the firewall end of the heads. With this system you can get low fuel flow at the rear injectors, especially effected are 6&8 as they fire one after the other and are side by side. Low fuel flow to the injectors causes premature wear on the injectors. A rear fuel crossover line is installed by removing the plugs at the rear of each head and connecting the rear fuel passages on the heads together, this makes the fuel system delivery to the heads a loop thus reducing fuel starvation and pulses to the injectors. This was also a problem on the 7.3.
The right side exhaust up pipe that feeds the turbo has an branch at the top that feeds exhaust through the EGR cooler, then the EGR valve and into the cylinders. By deleting the EGR exhaust feed from the up-pipe, capping off the rear of the EGR cooler and turning off the EGR valve, no exhuast gasses are returned into the motor. This reduces engine temps, soot levels in the engine and if the EGR cooler leaks antifreeze it will not enter the engine.
Both of these mods are done to increase the longevity of the engine.
What's the estimated cost on doing the rear fuel crossover and egr cooler up pipe delete? Also is this something that is easy to do or would it require a good bit of time and tools?

Rear fuel crossover line is $100 and EGR up-pipe delete $150.

The fuel crossover line is much easier to do when you have the egr cooler up-pipe out since the driver side fuel plug in the back of the head is a real bear to get to and you have to take all that stuff loose anyway.
#2 in the top picture and #4 in the bottom picture is the section of pipe that you are changing out. #3 in the bottom picture is the connection you are eliminating and plugging in the back of the EGR cooler. The crossover line goes between the whole y-pipe assembly and the block--from head to head over the top of the tranny housing. I know it looks intimidating, but it isn't TOO bad if you take your time and have some ratcheting flex wrenches to help. You should be able to complete it in about a day--much less if you have access to a lift.
