68 F250 CS conversion question.
a great candidate 1968 F250 CS. Easy restore. perfect floors, light
surface rust frame and here and there on bed and body. MU color.
PWR DISC FRONT. A/C. 390 C6. 2WD. I just wanted to ask a few questions.
I noticed when I removed the bed that it was cut with a torch in the corner for
the aug tank and correct cover installed all painted even over very rough torch cut edge. The tool box on side had the brace cut to make room for the
tool box ,but the fender is molded to the box contour. all confusing to me.
It has rear sway bar. sandwich clamped to frame and u-bolt to dana 60.
Extra figure 8 helper springs. One side top part missing other not. one side sway bar fell off frame. And I have seen the emblem on another truck for
camper special on the cab behind hood. I have emblems on lower fender
near the 390 emblem. has the holes for the camper mirrors but removed
and only car type now. What do I got. Possible dealer conversion to camper
special or factory truck. What should I look for to I.D. correctly. I am happy
to be restoring this baby. I really like it. One more dumb question. Above the
frame at AUG gas tank is a plugin harness. like for computer. what is it.
Aug lights. camper lights. there is nothing pluged into it. like five or six wires
big plug in.
Thats All. And I would like to say hello to all the ford truck people too.
1970 F250 Camper Special Explorer addition
360 CI 2WD
PWR front disk and A/C
(another midwest rust bucket used for parts)
I noticed your same observations on a truck I recently removed parts from. The hole going through the bed was cut using a cutting torch. The filler tube hole on the outside was cut with a hole saw. At first I thought it was a homemade aux fuel tank addition, but looking closer too many things matched to the frame. I also noticed this when I removed the cab A/C unit. The holes in the fire wall were all cut with a hole saw. The non-A/C heater holes were there too, but they were cut clean and covered with plastic plugs. Seems like these two additions were afterthoughts from the original design and "cut" in later. I didn't notice the installation of the tool box.
The CS emblems are behind the hood on mine, but I have a 360. Maybe the 390's had a different location.
This truck was not equiped with sway bars.
I read a wiring diagram and you answered your final question. That five or six pin "plug" is for a camper hook up. I know there is battery power on that connector, but I don't remember what the other pins are for. It was bolted to the top of the frame with a rather large bolt.
I took a few pictures of this parts truck so I could remember where things go on my "good" truck. I will try and post the ones showing the poorly cut holes.
I have two Camper Specials, a '68 and a '72. The Camper Special emblem is a script that is located down low on on the fender on the '68 but on the '72 it's a rectangular emblem located just behind the hood, so it was changed in later years. I've never removed the aux. tank filler tube cover on either one so I can't say if it's torch cut or not, but it wouldn't surprise me.
You could have aftermarket A/C, and who knows what they did to install it. If it's factory air, the controls will be integral with the heater controls and the evaporator mounts up behind the glove box so it has a special very shallow glove box.
F68250CS, it sounds as if someone has added aftermarket overload springs and sway bar to yours.
You may wish to contact Ford to request a build sheet, which will tell you how your truck was originally equipped though I found a couple of slight discrepancies when I got one for my '68.
You can find the listings for the camper special options. my tool box
is add on option. they are all basic 3/4 ton trucks with different options.
But the quick torch cut- real sloppy- but painted made me look twice.
I have all the options to make it correct. I am going down to frame with cab
for the restoration. I am removing the helper part of the flex-o-matic rear leaf
springs and removed the sway bar and will use easy ride shocks. My interior is excellent shape. major plus there. I am going to use the AOD non computer. I have 2 that I built ,diode,2 inch band. all extra clutches and the A servo, ect.
One is for my 67 cougar. I want to try the adapter for 390 it looks like it will
work. I got nice rebuilt large port heads and intake match Will use the 4300
carb. headers dual exhaust. plan to rebuild the motor, trans, rearend.
Just finished a 9" track lok. but this is a dana 60. Probably don't need
much. hopefully. maybe get by with axle bearings and seals. would be
nice. find out in about 2 weeks I guess.
Well this forum has good information, I have been spending time reading
a lot of post. I didn't think I would hear from my post because my question
was overdune I guess. Anyway it is cool to have this old truck it will probably
be my daily driver. I got a 2005 mustang GT and a 1967 cougar too. I must
be pretty lucky, my truck is in great shape for its age and my cougar is too.
Got my LMC truck catalog and Dennis Carpenter catalog on order.
I hear the Dennis Carpenter items are better quality and fit.
I don't plan to do to many mods but I want to keep the smaller mirrors
that was on the truck, the camper mirrors were missing but the holes
are all there. get the mig out and fill them up I guess. need one piece of chrome but I just saw an old rust bucket with all the trim. I need to run
the owners down. near my home is about 50 old cars and some trucks
I saw another old ford in there but I don't know who owns the property
yet. Its a camper special because it has the mirrors. the back window
has big letters, CREATURE. Its all rust creature now. the mirrors and trim look good from 100 feet.
Well nice to be a new member. Thanks.
