What about the tranny? Did Ford ever use a 385 motor in a stock 4wd? Can we find any transmission to fit the 460 (385 series motor) that is set up for a transfer case?
Are they all special units someone has modified to fit the 385 bell and still have a 4wd tail shaft? Is it the tail shaft that makes a tranny into a 4wd?
Well, there was a 460 used in later model F250s. The trannie that I sent over the hill was a C-6 trans for the 460. As I remember, you just need the correct tale shaft. I will look out my way for one.
If anyone else knows differently, please let me know, so I don't go junk yard huntin' for "snipe". (a feathered creature that doesn't exist)
The tailshaft is different from 2WD to 4WD, but of course we already have one. We have all the correct internals, they're just in the wrong case. Yes, the 2WD tranny that came with the engine will work if our internals are used in it's case.
Well, pushrods arrived today, so I'll start gathering things up in a box and make an inventory of what I'm taking back to Dan's, gives everyone a chance to say "Hey, you forgot..."
I'll also steam off a few things too, hate to see Karl get the job and have to wash them big fuel tanks again
Mike's steam cleaner crapped out so he wasn't able to finish cleaning the block. The heads are as he got them, and it appears to me to be Ford red, not GM. I always paint my engines Ford red when I build them, but I didn't build this one. Perhaps the group should decide what color(s) to paint it.
The valve covers are pretty trashed, (one is anyway) we'll have to find another pair or pop for some aftermarket ones. Stamped steel chrome covers can be had pretty cheap, probably 25 or 30 bucks for the pair.
I have always thought there was a certain "charm" to a mixed bag of colors. Especially if it runs like a BEAST!! That intake manifold looks pretty nice though, doesn't it? If it is important, I can send down a set of chrome valve covers. It is only about $50...
Na, it is not important - we can watch the swap meets and find some. I sure like the big square aluminum ones that say "built Ford tough" or "Cobra Jet" Some of the chrome ones look cheesy, worse than the stock stamped steel ones.
OK, we can let the group pick the color. But the first time someone asks me if we are running a GM big Block, out comes the blue spray can. When did Ford run a red engine?
