Fuel pump or wire problem

I just bought a 96 F250 flat bed with dual tanks. I have not driven the truck yet except home from the dealer. My rear pump seems to be not working. No sound when I turn on the key with switch in rear position and it won't start or dies if I switch to rear tank. If just the rear pump is gone, would the guage read the fuel level of the rear tank when selected? Or with the pump not working the guage won't work either for that tank. If it should work, I might have a wireing problem. I filled the rear tank before I knew the pump was not working because the front tank leaked out the filler tube when I tried to put fuel in. The filler tube was bent over the frame causing the gas not to go in the tank and back-up out. I bent it straght but have not tested it yet. So I have a full rear tank with a nonworking pump and nearly empty midship tank. The guage doesn't change at all when I switch tanks.

Not an expert here, but I'm pretty sure your level sending unit and the fuel pump are two separate things. So, if both are giving you unexpected results I would start by checking the ground to the tank. Maybe clamp a second ground wire and see if things change. Is your tank metal? Plastic?

Someone with more experience will be along shortly.

If you drop down the forum list you will find a forum dedicated to your year of truck. You should ask your question there. In fact there is a thread going right now about the fuel tanks on an '88 which is a similar build to an '96.

Good luck,
Bill

Do not assume that just because it's a metal tank it doesn't need a separate ground.
