Stupid Battery Question

I have the slow crank when hot problem sometimes. My battery cables are all thick and new with clean and tight connections and good grounds. Timing is right on. I realize my truck has a group 36 battery in it and not the group 27 I believe it should have. Do you think the extra 100 CA from the group 27 would help start this 460 when it's hot? Charging system is fine.

Do a voltage drop test. I can't tell you how many cables I've seen go bad that look fine on the outside. It will pinpoint what's wrong without throwing parts at it.

Yeah, I've replaced all the cables a couple months ago, and the old ones were shot and had the crappy ends on them. I put the fattest heavy duty cables I could find on it.

I say the problem is the heat affect on the starter itself... a popular problem.

The More CCA's the better..especially for a 460.

I'm with the voltage drop idea- also load test the battery, if you have access to vat40- load the battery to 1/2 its cca rating if it stays above 9.6 v the battery is good. If you can't get to that kind of equipment, just crank the engine with a voltmeter on it- if it stays above 9.6 its probably ok. After you know for sure that your battery is good and that your circuitry is good (voltage drop pos and neg cables) then maybe its time to look into a starter.
