Anyone know what the most likely culprit is for an intermittent driver's door power window problem? Periodically the window won't go back up once its been lowered. If you try pressing the switch in each direction a couple of times the window eventually goes back up like normal. I figure it could be either the window switch (but it sounds like there's a faint clicking noise coming from the door even when the window doesn't work, when the button is pressed), the window motor, or a limit switch if there is one.
The activation tang in the control switch sounds as if it is broken. I believe the only way to fix it is to replace it. You should be able to disconnect it and jump it over to confirm function for switch replacement.
My 00 Navigator started doing the same thing - window wouldn't go up. I could hold the switch in the up position and slam the door or bump the door bottom and the window would go up. I found out it was a bad window motor (had one spot on motor brushes that didn't make good contact) and replaced the motor. The window works as advertised since then.
To find out if it is the motor or the window wait until the window won't go up, gain access to the switch and measure voltage at the switch when you push the up rocker. If you have good voltage at the switch but the window doesn't move then it is most likely the motor.
Thanks hotstang. When your window wouldn't go up, do you remember if you could hear a clik sound coming from inside the door when you would press the window switch? I'm guessing it's a relay, which would mean the switch is doing what it's supposed to do and the motor isn't. This would seem to back up your theory that the motor has a bad spot.
