whats the best way to get oil stains out of a cement floor? i just had a 5gal pail fall off a shelf and bust open a week or so ago, oils gone but the stain remains.ive heard of paint thinner then soak it all up with oil dry.does that realy work?
I've used muriatic acid in the past. It worked pretty well. Depending on how long it's been there, you might be stuck with some stain. Good excuse for putting some sort of coating on it like u-coat-it....
Only draw back to using an acid is most of them will take the grout off the top or atleast weaken it. Contact your local concrete supply place and they may have something to clean it with.
Get some dry Portland cement powder this is the stuff they make concrete with do not use premixed just add water stuff sprinkel it on the oil stain until it is a 1/4 to 1/2" thick and keave it there for a couple of days then sweep it up if you still have a stain repeat. This will absorb the oil out of the concrete into the cement powder after you are finished brake clean sprayed on the concrete and wiped up with a clean cloth should be gone.
Weused this for years on construction to clean up oil from threading pipe it would get sprayed all over even though we used cardboard on the floor.
Okay I know this is going to sound off the wall but here goes any way. I work in the industrial maintenance business. A lot of times oil gets spilled but the jug. Here's what I have the guys do. clean up as much as poss. with oil dry, once you're down to the stain spread a thin amount [just enough to cover the stain] then take their boot and rub the oil dry good putting some pressure to it. Beleive it or not after a few min.'s it stain is almost gone. I'm sure there's someother way to do it with out rubbing with the bottom of the boot, but boots is always handy. No I'm not drinking right now at least not much.
We used to spread solvent on the floor and then spread oil dry over it and then rub it in with our boots like half breed said to do. When we got done it would be so clean you could almost eat off it. I keep some bags of saw dust around in case I spill some oil or the like. Doesn't take it all up but does take the worst part of it.
Echoing the comments above: Two things I have learned from this forum, and verified to be true from my own use:
Specialized oil absorbers made of diatomaceous earth, such as "Oil Dry", work much better than clay-based kitty litter or sawdust. Look at the ingredient label before buying.
Grinding the absorbent into the stain with your boots works much better at taking up oil than just pouring it out and letting it sit there on top of the concrete.
