Well, I got the truck running the other night. It idles well but there's a lifter clacking. That's not really my concern right now. The tranny pan gasket had let go and all of the fluid had ran out over the last year or so. When I first started it and revved the engine, I heard a loud high pitched squeal from what I think was the transmission area (C-4 automatic) Flex plate maybe??? What would make that noise. I shut it down, changed the gasket, filled it, and started it back up. It's still making the noise. I moved it back and forth, in and out of the garage a few times and revved it again. I heard it again. I tried to drive it down the alley but it died on me and wouldn't stay running then. Who knows? I gave up and pushed it back into it's cave. I'll try again sometime this week. I think I know whats up with the engine dying on me but the squeal, I have no idea. So, to any of you tranny gurus, what would make a squeal like that from the tranny/flex plate area after a year or so sitting empty. Anything specific I should be looking for?
If it were something dragging on the flexplate, the noise would (almost certainly) be constant. It sounds like this comes and goes? Did you do anything to the engine or trans since the last time you ran it?

With you having problems keeping the engine running, are you sure the squeal is not a vacuum leak? Sometimes a cracked vacuum hose can make some high pitched noises.
